After writing play ideas for 40 consecutive days and 40 nights, I need a welcomed break. I set myself a goal one sleepless night and I achieved the thing. Similarly, I was unhappy with the celebration of Black History Month three years ago. I decided to write about a pioneer black lawyer every day as my dissent to the loss of historical memory. Three years later, I have written 100 essays over the course of 100 days about 100 pioneer black lawyers. Our stories need to be told. Our songs are not sung.
If you want to know more about self reliance and self discipline as a way of understanding race, buy my book, Letters in Black and White: A New Correspondence on Race, co-authored with Jennifer Richmond. Something is happening here. Why read about the color troubles of Cleopatra when real stories about real black people are happening, (and have happened) every day?
